DocCom's Past

Doctor Communication Solutions Ltd (DocCom) was founded in 2007 by two NHS doctors, on the principle that good communication is fundamental to the delivery of quality, safe and timely care to patients. Through the microcosm of their professional roles and training experiences, they gained first-hand experience of the wider communication challenges facing the NHS today.

As part of a local project designed to facilitate communication with their junior doctor colleagues in University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, Jonathan Bloor and Jonathon Shaw produced the first recognisable version of the DocCom Portal product.

For the first time, senior medical and administrative staff were able to keep up-to-date records of the locations and roles of their constantly rotating trainee clinicians. Meanwhile, the trainees themselves were furnished with a rich suite of on-line tools, allowing them to share and disseminate information and teaching materials, connect and network with their colleagues, and feed back information to the Trust about their training experiences and needs.

It soon became apparent that the DocCom Portal met a wider need for better communication between NHS organisations and all of their front-line staff, not just junior doctors. With the support of University Hospitals Bristol and NHS Innovations South West, Drs. Bloor and Shaw embarked on a commercial venture to build upon the local successes of their portal system. They secured funding to develop the DocCom Portal into a commercially viable product, and began to forge a strong client-base in the South West of England.

Since then, DocCom have developed a suite of complimentary products for the NHS, yet they remain as committed as ever to the founding principle that quality, safe patient care is dependent on timely and effective communication with the front-line of NHS staff.
